International News: Chinese cyberattacks on Taiwan surge to millions daily, targeting critical infrastructure

By Zoila Palma:  Chinese cyberattacks on Taiwan’s critical infrastructure surged sharply in 2025, reaching an average of 2.63 million incidents per day, according to Taiwan’s National Security Bureau.

The figure represents a 6% increase from 2024 and more than double the level recorded in 2023, Modern diplomacy reports.

The attacks targeted hospitals, emergency services, banks, energy systems, telecommunications networks, science parks, and semiconductor firms, and frequently coincided with Chinese military exercises near the island.

Taipei said the scale and timing of the cyber operations point to a broader strategy of “hybrid warfare” by Beijing, combining cyber intrusions, military pressure, and disinformation campaigns.

By focusing on essential services and everyday systems, Taiwanese officials say China appears to be testing the island’s resilience and demonstrating its capacity to cause disruption without direct military action.

The growing cyber threat has intensified pressure on Taiwan’s government to protect vital infrastructure and maintain public confidence, while raising concerns among global partners.
