By Zoila Palma: China struck a notably low-key tone at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos as it quietly sought to position itself as an attractive destination for Western investment, Reuters report.
Business leaders said Beijing’s restrained approach contrasted sharply with the United States, with some suggesting China could benefit from tensions between the Trump administration and Europe, including over Greenland.
Vice-Premier He Lifeng represented Beijing at the meeting, delivering a brief speech that emphasized China’s willingness to buy more foreign goods and services rather than pursue trade surpluses.
Executives said China appeared to be “controlling the dynamic through stillness,” a reference to a concept from The Art of War, as it watched global political and economic turbulence unfold.
While U.S. President Donald Trump hosted large, high-profile gatherings with business leaders, China opted for smaller, more intimate meetings, delivering a simple message that it was open for business.
However, challenges remain, including China’s continued export of manufacturing overcapacity, particularly in electric vehicles, which has no immediate solution.
Several Western leaders used Davos to encourage closer economic ties with Beijing.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described China as a “reliable and predictable partner,” while Britain and China are working toward reviving business dialogue ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit.
