International News: China halts U.S. Soybean imports for first time in 7 years

Posted: Monday, October 20, 2025. 9:08 am CST.

By Zoila Palma:  China imported no soybeans from the United States in September, marking the first time since 2018 that shipments fell to zero, according to data from the General Administration of Customs.

The halt comes amid ongoing trade tensions between Beijing and Washington, with Chinese buyers favoring cheaper supplies from South America. Imports from Brazil surged nearly 30% year-on-year to 10.96 million tons—making up over 85% of China’s total soybean imports—while shipments from Argentina jumped more than 90% to 1.17 million tons.

According to Reuters, analysts say high tariffs on U.S. goods and limited availability of older U.S. crop supplies have deterred Chinese buyers. “This is mainly due to tariffs.

In a typical year, some old-crop beans would still enter the market,” said Wan Chengzhi, an analyst at Capital Jingdu Futures.

Despite the absence of American beans, China’s overall soybean imports in September reached 12.87 million metric tons, the second-highest monthly level on record. The U.S. harvest window is rapidly closing, with most Chinese crushers now securing cargoes through November from Brazil and Argentina, aided by temporary export incentives.

Industry experts warn that the shift could hurt U.S. farmers, who risk losing billions in sales without renewed Chinese demand.

At the same time, Beijing may face a supply gap early next year before Brazil’s next crop arrives.
