By Zoila Palma: China has accused the United States of displaying “typical double standards” following President Donald Trump’s renewed threat to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods.
In a statement released by the commerce ministry, Beijing said it was “not afraid” of a possible trade war and warned that it could introduce its own “countermeasures” if the U.S. moves forward with the tariffs, BBC reports.
The exchange follows escalating tensions after Beijing announced tighter export controls on rare earth materials — key components in products like solar panels and smartphones.
Trump responded by accusing China of becoming “very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “captive.” He also suggested he might cancel an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, though later softened his tone on social media, saying the two countries would “be fine” and that the U.S. “wants to help China, not hurt it.”
Financial markets reacted sharply to Trump’s comments, with the S&P 500 closing down 2.7% on Friday — its biggest drop since April.
The impact extended to Asia on Monday, as China’s Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.74% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 1.5%.
The developments reignited fears of a renewed trade war between the world’s two largest economies, just months after both sides agreed to roll back some of the tariffs that had previously disrupted global trade.
In its response, China’s commerce ministry criticized the U.S. for “abusing export control measures” and “overstretching the concept of national security,” particularly in relation to U.S. restrictions on semiconductors and high-tech goods.
