By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Security forces from several Central American countries have arrived in Haiti to aid in the battle against gangs terrorizing the nation, Reuters report.
A total of 75 Guatemalan and 8 Salvadoran soldiers landed in Port-au-Prince on Friday to bolster a delayed United Nations-backed mission.
Haiti’s transitional leaders, including Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime, welcomed the troops at the airport.
The force, led by Kenya with about 400 police officers, is still far below the planned 1,000 personnel.
Additional support has come from Jamaica and Belize.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo had previously pledged 150 military police, while El Salvador promised 78 soldiers and helicopters for medical evacuations to support Haiti’s security efforts.
