By Zoila Palma: On Friday, January 23, 2026, a group of journalists from Telepais in Honduras were attacked by a man who sprayed them with pepper spray and reportedly threatened them with a firearm.
The attack occurred while two journalists and a cameraman were in the vicinity of the lower area of the National Congress (CN), as they were heading to cover the establishment of the new Board of Directors, when they were confronted by the alleged political activist.
Video footage shows the aggressor spraying pepper spray directly into the face of one of the journalists.
Today, the Central American Network of Journalists (RCP) issued a statement strongly condemning the recent attack.
Following the attack, the individual was detained by members of the Honduran Army who were present at the scene.
“This attack adds to recent reports of death threats and acts of intimidation directed at journalists Alex Cáceres, Cesia Mejía, Carolina Lanza, and Cristian Morazán from HCH Digital Television.
Likewise, last week, a reporter from Radio Cadena Voces was assaulted by one of the Libre collectives during the accreditation process of elected candidates at the National Electoral Council.
This context of threats, attacks, harassment campaigns, criminalization, and high levels of impunity intensified following the recent elections in the Central American country. These acts perpetuate violence against journalists and media outlets,” the RCP noted.
The Central American Network of Journalists expressed solidarity with the Honduran press, which faces criminalization simply for carrying out its duty to inform.
The network calls on Honduran authorities to guarantee comprehensive attention and protection for the victims in order to prevent further attacks against journalists.
