International News: Celebrations meet growing social tensions as Mexico opens World Cup

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico is preparing to welcome the world as festivities begin for the FIFA World Cup, but the celebrations are unfolding amid growing social and political tensions, Newsday reports.

The country, which is co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States and Canada, is set to launch the competition with an inauguration ceremony and opening match on Thursday. The event is expected to draw global attention as Mexico seeks to showcase itself on the international stage.

The tournament arrives at a challenging moment for President Claudia Sheinbaum, who is facing a range of domestic and international pressures. These include a strained relationship with the United States ahead of upcoming trade negotiations, political controversies, and security concerns following a wave of violence in the host city of Guadalajara earlier this year. Political analyst Carlos Pérez Ricart said the World Cup has placed the government under intense pressure as it attempts to project a positive image of the country.

Across Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, streets have been decorated with FIFA branding, giant soccer balls and colorful displays as fans gather ahead of kickoff.

The Mexican Soccer Federation estimates the tournament will generate about $3 billion for hotels, restaurants and sports venues. Thursday’s opening ceremony, featuring performances by Colombian superstar Shakira and other entertainers, is expected to be one of the most-watched events of the competition.

Despite the excitement, criticism has intensified in recent weeks.

Teachers protesting for better working conditions have blocked roads and toppled World Cup statues, while families of missing persons have urged authorities to focus on humanitarian issues rather than preparations for international visitors.
