By Zoila Palma: Today, CBS News announced that it will shut down its long-running radio news service after nearly 100 years of operation, marking the end of a significant era in broadcast journalism.
The closure, set for May 22, comes amid layoffs and reflects shifting programming strategies among radio stations and ongoing economic challenges.
NBC reports that the service supplies content to about 700 stations nationwide, is best known for its top-of-the-hour news roundups.
Since its launch in September 1927, CBS News Radio played a foundational role in the development of the network, offering early opportunities to media pioneer William S. Paley and featuring iconic reporting from figures such as Edward R. Murrow during World War II.
In a memo to staff, editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski described the move as difficult but necessary. The decision reflects broader changes in how audiences consume news, as radio has declined in prominence compared to digital platforms and podcasts.
Historically, radio was a dominant source of news in the United States from the 1920s through the 1940s, with audiences tuning in to major broadcasts such as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chats.”
However, the rise of television in the 1950s and, more recently, online and mobile media has significantly reduced radio’s influence.
