By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Catholic priest Marcelo Pérez, an advocate for Indigenous peoples and farm laborers in southern Mexico, was shot dead on Sunday in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

Two gunmen attacked him while he was in his van shortly after he had completed a Mass, the Associated Press reports.

Pérez, a member of the Tzotzil Indigenous community, had served for two decades and was known for mediating conflicts in a region plagued by violence and land disputes.

He had previously faced death threats due to his activism and leadership in marches against violence.

Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandón condemned the “cowardly assassination” and pledged cooperation with authorities to ensure justice for Pérez’s death.
