By Zoila Palma: A United Parcel Service (UPS) cargo plane crashed near Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, killing at least seven people and injuring several others.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the incident as a “catastrophic crash,” adding that the death toll could rise as emergency crews continue to search the scene.
The aircraft, identified as Flight 2976, went down around 5:15 p.m. local time, roughly three miles south of the airport, shortly after taking off for Honolulu, USA Today reports.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed that among the victims were the three UPS crew members onboard and four others who were not on the plane. Eleven additional people were transported to local hospitals with injuries, some reported as serious.
Video footage captured the cargo plane taking off with one wing ablaze before crashing in a fiery explosion that ignited multiple buildings in an industrial area. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky as firefighters battled the blaze well into the night.
More than 100 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene, working to extinguish remaining hot spots and conduct grid searches for possible victims.
