International News: CARICOM reaffirms support for Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett as next UN Secretary-General

By Zoila Palma:  The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has reaffirmed its full support for Guyana’s Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, calling for Latin America and the Caribbean to have an opportunity to lead the global organization.

In a statement following the 44th Intersessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government on October 23, 2026, CARICOM leaders reiterated their commitment to multilateralism, the United Nations Charter, and international law. They also reaffirmed their decision to endorse Rodrigues-Birkett’s candidacy, which was outlined in a communiqué issued in July 2026.

CARICOM Heads of Government expressed confidence in Rodrigues-Birkett’s ability to lead the United Nations during a period of pressing global challenges and calls for institutional reform. They highlighted her more than two decades of experience in fieldwork, legislative and political affairs, diplomacy, and international civil service, as well as her skills in building consensus and advancing change.

The regional leaders also stressed the importance of equitable geographical representation and regional rotation in the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. They called on the UN Security Council and General Assembly to uphold these principles, emphasizing that they are particularly important for small states seeking meaningful representation in the organization’s highest offices.

CARICOM acknowledged the broad support extended to candidates from Latin America and the Caribbean and expressed appreciation for backing received by Rodrigues-Birkett.
