By Zoila Palma: CARICOM’s advancement must continue to be guided by unity and collective action despite growing regional and global pressures, according to Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. Carla Barnett, in her message marking the 53rd Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas.
In her CARICOM Day 2026 address, Barnett emphasized the foundational spirit of integration, stating, “CARICOM is a strong expression of collective determination to shape our own destiny.” She noted that this shared purpose has helped Member States strengthen cooperation and expand their voice on global issues through sustained collaboration.
The Secretary-General highlighted that the Community has made progress across key sectors including security, climate action, health, education, and disaster response. “Through active collaboration and mutual support, we have strengthened economic partnerships and amplified CARICOM’s voice on issues of global importance,” she said, underscoring the value of regional coordination in addressing development challenges.
However, Barnett cautioned that these gains are being tested by increasing external and environmental pressures. “Even as we celebrate these successes, we are mindful of the pressures that challenge hard-won progress and unity,” she said, pointing to the impact of climate-related disasters, including hurricanes, as well as global economic uncertainty affecting trade and development.
Reaffirming the need for deeper integration, Barnett stressed that the Region’s future depends on working together. “CARICOM remains convinced that our advancement must continue to be driven by collective action,” she stated.
“We remain ever mindful of the current and future needs of our young people, who deserve a Region that is prosperous, technologically advanced, and full of opportunity,” Dr. Barnett expressed.
Happy CARICOM Day 2026.
