By Zoila Palma:  At least three Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries have expressed concern over escalating hostilities in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran and retaliatory attacks by Iran targeting the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states.

The US and Israel carried out the strikes on Saturday, citing threats from Iran, which responded with volleys of missiles aimed at Gulf countries hosting US bases and at Israel.

The Jamaican Gleaner reports that Trinidad and Tobago initially urged its nationals in the Middle East to take precautions before issuing a second statement expressing support for the actions of the United States and Israel and their allies.

The government of Kamla Persad-Bissessar said it supports efforts aimed at preventing oppressive regimes from acquiring nuclear weapons capabilities that would threaten international peace and security.

Guyana reiterated the need for the sustained pursuit of lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation condemned what it described as Iran’s unprovoked attacks on the Kingdom of Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait, calling them unjustified and in breach of international law.

Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda said it was deeply concerned by the rapid and dangerous escalation of hostilities.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne condemned attacks against the territorial integrity of states not directly party to the conflict and urged maximum restraint and immediate de-escalation.

He said Antigua and Barbuda joins the call of the international community, including the United Nations Secretary-General, for renewed diplomatic engagement.

Jamaica advised its nationals to avoid travel to the Middle East, with the government of Andrew Holness urging Jamaicans in the region to exercise vigilance and shelter in place as conditions require.
