By Zoila Palma: Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago has been elected the 267th pope, making history as the first American to lead the Catholic Church. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement came after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on the second day of the conclave, signaling that the 133 voting cardinals had reached a two-thirds majority.
Prevost, 69, brings global experience to the role, having spent years as a missionary in Peru and recently serving as head of the Vatican’s office for bishop appointments.
Crowds in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers as they awaited his first appearance on the basilica’s balcony.
