By Zoila Palma: Cape Verde’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end last night after a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.
Ranked 67th in the world before the tournament and the smallest nation competing at this year’s World Cup, the Blue Sharks defied expectations with an inspiring run that turned them into one of the competition’s biggest success stories.
The tournament debutants announced themselves on football’s biggest stage by earning three draws during the group stage, including a stunning scoreless result against European champions Spain in their opening match.
Cape Verde also scored their first-ever FIFA World Cup goals against Uruguay to secure a historic place in the knockout stage, where they pushed Lionel Messi and Argentina to the brink in one of the tournament’s most memorable encounters.
After falling behind to a Messi strike, Cape Verde responded through Deroy Duarte before Sidny Lopes Cabral’s spectacular long-range effort leveled the match at 2-2 in extra time. Their fairytale, however, ended in cruel fashion when a Lionel Messi free kick deflected off defender Diney Borges and into the net, handing Argentina a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Despite the loss, Cape Verde left the field to a standing ovation after matching the reigning world champions for much of the game.
