By Zoila Palma: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called the United States’ decision to impose steep new tariffs on Canadian goods a “miscalculation” after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed late Friday.
The new 50% duties took effect at midnight, affecting a wide range of Canadian exports and escalating tensions between the two North American trading partners, NBC reports.
Carney said the negotiations broke down because of what he described as “uneconomic” and “unfair” demands from the Trump administration.
“In short, they asked too much, and they offered too little,” Carney said.
The tariffs affect an estimated $20 billion worth of U.S. imports from Canada, with products ranging from hockey sticks and building materials to liquor and certain clothing. Canada has announced retaliatory measures, with Carney saying the country will respond with tariffs targeting U.S. goods in sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Those measures are expected to take effect September 8.
Carney said the U.S. had introduced significant changes to its demands during the final hours of negotiations, including restrictions on Canada’s ability to pursue trade agreements with other countries.
