By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced he will resign as leader of the Liberal Party, ending his nine-year tenure as PM. He will remain in office until a new leader is selected.
Trudeau, 53, cited internal party struggles and his diminishing popularity ahead of the upcoming federal election, BBC reports.
Trudeau’s resignation follows the recent departure of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who criticized his handling of U.S. trade threats.
Under Trudeau’s leadership, the Liberals struggled with inflation, housing costs, and growing opposition, with the Conservative Party leading in the polls.
Trudeau’s leadership saw significant policy achievements but also scandals and controversy.
His approval rating has recently plummeted to just 22%.
The Liberal Party will now begin the process of selecting a new leader to lead them into the next election, which must occur by October 20, 2025.
