By Zoila Palma: Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned Canadians of challenging times ahead if the United States follows through with President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico.
Speaking on Friday, Trudeau said Canada would respond immediately and forcefully, but in a reasonable manner, if the tariffs are enacted, Reuters report.
Trump has set a Saturday deadline for the tariffs, citing concerns over illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
Trudeau emphasized the importance of the moment, acknowledging the potential economic impact, as Canada relies heavily on U.S. exports.
“We’re ready with a response… it’s not what we want, but we will act if necessary,” Trudeau stated. He also reassured Canadians that the government would support them through any difficulties that arise.
