By Zoila Palma:  Leaders of Canada and Mexico met Thursday in Mexico to reaffirm their commitment to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) while seeking adjustments to make the deal “fairer” amid tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, AFP reports.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the agreement has made North America “the economic envy of the world,” while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed optimism about its future.

The USMCA, in place since 2020, is up for review next year and is critical to both countries, which export the majority of their goods to the United States.

Trump has already imposed steep tariffs on certain Canadian and Mexican goods not covered under the agreement, disrupting supply chains and hurting key sectors such as autos, steel, and aluminum.

Carney and Sheinbaum emphasized that their countries would work together, complementing the United States rather than competing, and highlighted initiatives to boost bilateral trade and investment using Canadian and Mexican ports to diversify exports.

The leaders also announced plans to enhance cooperation on foreign affairs, agriculture, environment, and security.

With next year’s FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, both Carney and Sheinbaum pointed to the tournament as a symbol of North American collaboration and expressed hope that the USMCA review would lead to a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade framework.
