By Zoila Palma: Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide state of emergency as officials prepare for a potentially historic El Niño weather event that could bring severe winter storms, flooding, landslides, and coastal erosion.
The governor’s office said state resources are being mobilized to strengthen preparedness and protect vulnerable communities ahead of the expected weather impacts.
Under the emergency proclamation, state agencies are directed to stage flood-fighting supplies, including sandbags and pumps, prepare critical infrastructure, and position equipment along roads at risk of flooding and snow-related disruptions.
The California National Guard may also support flood response, search-and-rescue, engineering, and logistics operations, while environmental agencies will work to accelerate preparations for landslides and debris flows.
California Office of Emergency Services Director Caroline Thomas Jacobs said officials are taking action before severe weather arrives, ensuring that communities and first responders have the personnel, equipment, and support needed to respond to changing conditions. Newsom said the emergency declaration is intended to provide communities with additional support and families with greater confidence that the state is prepared for severe weather.
El Niño is a climate pattern involving unusually warm ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, which can influence weather patterns across the United States and other regions.
