By Zoila Palma:  El Salvador’s Congress, led by President Nayib Bukele’s New Ideas party, passed a sweeping electoral reform on Thursday that removes presidential term limits and allows indefinite re-election.

The move also extends presidential terms from 5 to 6 years and eliminates run-off elections, Reuters report.

The bill, passed 57-3 just before a legislative recess, comes despite constitutional bans on consecutive terms.

Bukele was re-elected last year after a controversial 2021 court ruling—by judges aligned with him—declared re-election a human right.

Opposition lawmakers and human rights groups condemned the changes, warning they mark a shift toward authoritarianism.

Bukele, still widely popular for his tough anti-gang policies, has faced growing criticism for cracking down on eroding democratic institutions.
