International News: Brown University Professor alleges widespread AI cheating in exam

By Zoila Palma:  A Brown University professor has raised alarm over what he describes as “overwhelming evidence” of widespread cheating in one of his economics courses, warning that artificial intelligence is putting academic integrity under serious threat.

Roberto Serrano, a professor of economics at Brown University, says at least 50 students in his advanced undergraduate course, ECON 1170, cheated during a March midterm exam. The exam, a take-home, closed-book assignment, produced unusually high results, including an average score of 96 out of 100 and 40 perfect scores. Serrano says some answers contained passages that matched outputs generated by AI tools such as ChatGPT, forming what he believes is the largest known academic misconduct case at Brown and possibly the wider Ivy League.

According to Serrano, when he reported the issue to university leadership, the response was limited and slow, prompting him to bring the matter before the Academic Code Committee. He later received a brief acknowledgment describing the situation as a “wake-up call,” but says he believes the university has not treated the issue with sufficient urgency.

The professor, a long-serving academic and recipient of major awards in economics, argues that the case highlights a broader crisis fueled by artificial intelligence in higher education.
