By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Brazilian authorities successfully prevented a planned bombing at Lady Gaga’s massive free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, arresting two suspects in connection with the foiled plot.
Over 2 million fans attended the event, unaware of the looming threat. The suspects—a male adult and a teenager—were apprehended in different states as part of Operation Fake Monsters, a multi-agency investigation conducted by Brazil’s Justice Ministry, Federal Police, and digital intelligence services.
Authorities report that the suspects intended to use Molotov cocktails and improvised explosives to target concertgoers. Investigators linked them to an online group promoting hate speech, with attempts to recruit teenagers for violent acts. Additionally, one suspect was found in possession of child pornography.
Despite the security concerns, the concert proceeded without incident, with Lady Gaga’s team stating they were unaware of any threats before or during the event. The pop star later thanked her fans.
“The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history,” Lady Gaga said after the concert, reflecting on the historic night and sharing her gratitude.
Brazilian officials reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding public events, stressing the importance of digital surveillance in identifying and neutralizing emerging threats.
