By Zoila Palma: Black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel early Thursday, signaling that Catholic cardinals have not yet selected a new pope.
Anticipation is building in St. Peter’s Square, where crowds from around the world — waving flags from Brazil to Bulgaria — gather for updates as voting continues, NBC reports.
Cardinals are now on their fourth and fifth ballots, with many hoping for a decision by this afternoon.
The 2025 conclave is the largest in history, with 133 electors, most chosen by Pope Francis and many from outside Europe. Still, the process remains entirely secret, and no frontrunners are publicly known.
Historian Miles Pattenden says politically savvy cardinals may try to wrap up the conclave quickly, possibly even today.
If no decision comes by Friday, more intensive voting is expected Sunday.
Conclave rules remain strict: no outside contact, simple meals, and tight food inspections — a centuries-old tradition to prevent tampering and delays.
