By Horace Palacio: President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection in 2024 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee, following a weeks-long pressure campaign from fellow Democrats after his much-criticized debate performance in late June.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down,” Biden said in a statement posted to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. He added that he plans to address the nation later this week but made clear his intention to finish out the last three months of his term in office.
In a separate post following the announcement, Biden expressed his full support for Harris. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump,” he wrote. “Let’s do this.”
Biden’s decision comes less than a month before the Democrats’ nominating convention in Chicago, scheduled to start on August 19. His endorsement of Harris positions her as the frontrunner in the race, but also raises questions about the process for officially selecting the nominee and how she will fare against former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
The President’s announcement marks a crucial moment for the Democratic Party as it shifts focus to rallying behind Harris and ensuring a unified front for the 2024 election.
