By Zoila Palma: England booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium last night, overcoming a second-half red card in one of their most impressive performances of the tournament.
The Round of 16 clash was delayed by an hour due to severe weather before Thomas Tuchel’s side secured a dramatic win to set up a quarter-final showdown with Norway.
Jude Bellingham starred for the Three Lions, scoring twice in just 98 seconds to put England firmly in control before halftime. Mexico responded through Julian Quinones, who fired home three minutes before the break to cut the deficit. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also played a crucial role in the opening half, producing several outstanding saves to deny Raul Jimenez and preserve his side’s advantage.
England faced a major setback nine minutes into the second half when defender Jarell Quansah was shown a red card for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, England restored their two-goal cushion after Harry Kane converted a penalty awarded when Anthony Gordon was fouled by goalkeeper Raul Rangel. Mexico refused to give up, however, and Raul Jimenez converted from the penalty spot after Kane fouled Brian Gutierrez inside the area, making it 3-2.
Mexico piled on the pressure during 11 minutes of stoppage time, but England’s defense stood firm to seal a memorable victory. Bellingham’s brilliant all-around display, Pickford’s outstanding goalkeeping, and England’s resilience under intense pressure ensured their passage to the last eight, where they will face Norway in the quarter-finals.
