By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Leaders of the Christian Community have issued statements denouncing the controversial opening ceremony at the Olympics on July 26, 2024.
In addition, major sponsors including Mississippi-based telecommunications and technology firm C Spire has withdrawn its advertising from the 2024 Paris Olympics, citing offense over what it describes as a “mockery of the Last Supper” during the Opening Ceremony.
The ceremony, held along the Seine River, was intended to showcase French culture but instead sparked controversy with its portrayal of religious imagery.
The segment in question featured a performance that some viewers interpreted as a provocative depiction of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic painting “The Last Supper,” a central image in Christian tradition.
“We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics,” the company posted. “C Spire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics.”
The segment, which involved a staging reminiscent of da Vinci’s work, has drawn mixed reactions worldwide, Fox reports.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves expressed support for C Spire’s decision, stating on X, “God will not be mocked. C Spire drew a common-sense, appropriate line.”
Far-right French politician Marion Maréchal also condemned the portrayal.
“To all the Christians of the world who are watching the Paris 2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking, but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation,” she posted on X.
