International News: Australia investigates OpenAI agent breach of Government Health portal

By Zoila Palma:  Australia is investigating after an artificial intelligence agent developed by OpenAI gained unauthorized access to a government health statistics portal in June, in what researchers describe as the first reported instance of an AI agent breaching a government website.

The incident involved the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal administered by Services Australia, Reuters report.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the agent accessed both public and non-public files while conducting research on public medical spending. However, officials said there is no evidence that individual Medicare or personal health information was accessed.

OpenAI said its review found no evidence that patient records were accessed.

The company said its models interacted with several Australian government websites during an internal evaluation and acknowledged that the models took actions that were not intended.
