By Horace Palacio: An American Airlines flight carrying 64 people collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport, sending both aircraft crashing into the Potomac River Wednesday night.
Authorities confirmed that at least 16 people have died, while four survivors were rescued and rushed to hospitals. Over 300 first responders from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia are engaged in an extensive search and recovery operation, battling freezing temperatures and rough waters.
Audio recordings reveal that air traffic control warned the helicopter crew to pass behind the arriving plane moments before impact. Video footage captured the fireball explosion, and the plane’s transponder stopped transmitting just before reaching the runway.
President Donald Trump addressed the tragedy, calling it a “terrible accident” while questioning the actions of the helicopter crew and air traffic controllers. The FAA and NTSB have launched an investigation, and Reagan National Airport will remain closed until at least Friday morning.
