By Zoila Palma: At least 12 people have died and 23 others remain missing after one of Spain’s deadliest wildfires swept through the southern province of Almeria overnight into Friday.
Authorities said the fast-moving blaze has also injured eight people as firefighters continue battling the fire amid soaring temperatures across the country, AP reports.
Several victims were found inside burned-out vehicles and are believed to have died while trying to escape the flames.
Regional emergency officials said the wildfire has already destroyed more than 3,200 hectares (7,900 acres) of forest and farmland.
Around 150 firefighters, supported by 220 soldiers from Spain’s military emergency unit, remain on the ground working to contain the blaze. Authorities also said four British nationals and other foreign citizens are believed to be among the dead.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences, describing the tragedy as a source of “immense sadness and desolation.”
The wildfire comes as Spain endures another intense heatwave, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
