International News: Artemis II crew set for historic splashdown after record-breaking journey

By Zoila Palma:  NASA’s Artemis II is set to complete its historic journey as the four-member crew prepares to return to Earth following a groundbreaking mission around the Moon.

Splashdown is scheduled for approximately 8:07 p.m. tonight, off the coast of San Diego, marking the end of the first crewed flight in NASA’s Artemis program.

The mission has already secured its place in history after the astronauts traveled 248,655 miles from Earth on April 6, the farthest distance ever reached by humans in space. The milestone surpasses the previous record set during the Apollo 13 mission in 1970, highlighting the significance of Artemis II in advancing deep space exploration.

As the crew returns aboard the Orion spacecraft, they will undergo a high-speed and high-risk reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Traveling faster than the speed of sound, the capsule will endure extreme temperatures reaching thousands of degrees, placing critical importance on the spacecraft’s heat shield, which is designed to protect astronauts during descent.

NASA has drawn on decades of experience with splashdown landings, a method used since the early days of human spaceflight. One of the most dramatic early examples involved astronaut Gus Grissom during the 1961 Liberty Bell 7 mission, when a malfunction caused his capsule to flood after landing, forcing a near-fatal escape before he was rescued.

Despite such past challenges, splashdowns remain a reliable method for returning astronauts safely to Earth.

Engineers rely on atmospheric drag and large parachutes to slow spacecraft before impact, while the ocean serves as a natural cushion.
