By Zoila Palma: Defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina are just three wins away from successfully defending their 2022 title as they prepare to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Kansas City Stadium.
Led by captain Lionel Messi, Argentina are not only pursuing a fourth World Cup crown but are also on the verge of achieving two historic milestones.
A successful title defense would make Argentina the first nation in 64 years to win back-to-back World Cups. Only Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) have previously accomplished the feat.
Messi is also chasing another remarkable milestone.
Earlier this tournament, the Argentine superstar surpassed former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record, increasing his career total to 21 goals. He now turns his attention to one of the competition’s longest-standing individual records.
France’s Just Fontaine scored a record 13 goals during the 1958 World Cup, a mark that has stood for nearly seven decades.
Messi enters the quarterfinals with a tournament-leading eight goals, leaving him five short of Fontaine’s record with a maximum of three matches remaining if Argentina reaches the final.
