By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister Gaston Browne says that the government of Antigua and Barbuda is absorbing a portion of the rising global fuel costs to protect consumers from further increases in the cost of living, Antigua News reports.

PM Browne emphasized that the measure is aimed at cushioning the impact on households and businesses in a country heavily dependent on imports.

Gregory Georges, Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Oil Company (WIOC), noted that Antigua and Barbuda is already experiencing higher fuel costs.

He reported that a recent shipment arrived at significantly elevated prices, with diesel and jet fuel showing the most pronounced increases due to global market trends.

PM Browne explained that fuel price increases have a cascading effect across the economy, driving up transportation costs as well as the prices of groceries, hardware, and other essential goods.

He stressed that maintaining stable fuel prices is critical to limiting inflationary pressures.

The Prime Minister highlighted that, despite global fluctuations, gasoline prices in Antigua and Barbuda remain competitive within the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU).
