International News: Anti-Maduro protests erupt in Venezuela amid election fraud claims

Posted: Tuesday, July 30, 2024. 9:58 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Protests and clashes have intensified in Venezuela following President Nicolás Maduro’s controversial re-election over the weekend, Reuters report.

Opposition leaders claim the vote was rigged and that their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, won by a landslide.

The election board, however, declared Maduro victorious with 51% of the vote.

In response, Venezuelans have taken to the streets blocking roads, and clashing with police.

Demonstrations have been reported in Caracas and other cities, including Maracay and Coro. At least two people have died in the unrest.

Meanwhile, international reactions are divided since the U.S. dismisses the election’s credibility and considers additional sanctions, while China and Russia have congratulated Maduro.

In addition, 8 Latin American leaders have since called for a thorough vote recount.

Maduro, who has led Venezuela since 2013, faces accusations of presiding over economic collapse and widespread emigration.

His government maintains that security forces will handle the unrest and accuses opposition protesters of inciting violence.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado has called for further demonstrations, urging Venezuelans to unite and defend the vote’s integrity.

“My dear Venezuelans, tomorrow we meet; as a family, organized, demonstrating the determination we have to make every vote count and defend the truth,” she said.
