By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Amsterdam has imposed a three-day ban on demonstrations following violent attacks on Israeli soccer fans by what the mayor described as “antisemitic hit-and-run squads.”
According to Reuters, the assaults, which occurred Thursday night, targeted supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv FC in the city, with fans pelted with fireworks, verbally abused, and chased through the streets.
At least five individuals were hospitalized.
Riot police intervened to protect the fans, escorting them to safety.
Some footage showed Maccabi supporters chanting anti-Arab slogans before the match, further inflaming tensions.
The violence follows a surge in antisemitic incidents in the Netherlands, exacerbated by the ongoing Gaza-Israel conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that evacuation flights would be sent to bring the affected fans home, and Israel’s embassy condemned the attacks, likening them to a modern-day “pogrom.”
Dutch authorities have pledged to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Protests related to the Gaza conflict have been widespread in Europe, with both Jews and Arabs targeted in incidents of violence.
