International News: Amazon to invest $5 Billion in Mexico data center

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Amazon will invest over $5 billion in a new data center in central Mexico, aimed at supporting the growing demand for data storage driven by AI, AFP reports.

The announcement was made by Amazon Web Services (AWS) director Paula Bellizia during a press conference with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The new facility in Querétaro is expected to create around 7,000 jobs and contribute more than $10 billion to Mexico’s GDP over the next 15 years.

This investment is seen as a boost to Mexico’s digital infrastructure and economic future, especially amid concerns over potential tariff hikes from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

AWS, the largest cloud computing provider globally, competes with Google and Microsoft, who are also expanding their data center networks to meet the rising demands of AI.

AWS already operates a center in Brazil and plans additional ones in Chile.

While data centers can strain local resources like electricity and water, Amazon has committed to making its centers “water-positive” by 2030.
