By Zoila Palma: Amazon has announced plans to cut about 14,000 corporate jobs worldwide, with additional layoffs expected next year as the company restructures its operations to expand its use of artificial intelligence.
The move marks one of the largest corporate workforce reductions in Amazon’s history and comes as the tech giant seeks to streamline costs after rapid hiring during the pandemic, Reuters report.
The layoffs began this week across several departments, including devices, advertising, Prime Video, human resources, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Impacted employees received email notifications early Tuesday morning, informing them that their roles had been eliminated. Affected workers will receive 90 days to apply for other internal positions, with Amazon’s recruitment teams instructed to prioritize them.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy previously signaled that AI adoption would result in workforce changes, particularly through the automation of administrative and repetitive corporate tasks.
The company has been investing heavily in AI and cloud infrastructure, allocating an estimated $118 billion in capital expenditures this year. Jassy and other executives argue that AI is enabling faster innovation and helping Amazon operate more efficiently by reducing management layers.
The restructuring comes as Amazon faces growing scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers over the impact of automation on employment.
