By Zoila Palma: Nearly three-quarters of England has now been officially declared in drought as the country continues to experience historically dry and hot weather.
The National Drought Group said 71.3 percent of England is experiencing flash drought, with severe pressure on water resources affecting public supplies, agriculture, navigation and the environment.
The East Midlands, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Kent and East Sussex, and Solent and the South Downs were the latest regions placed under drought status. The North East and Yorkshire have been moved to prolonged dry weather status, the stage before drought, leaving no region in England classified as having normal water conditions.
The worsening water crisis follows provisional figures showing that England and Wales experienced their driest July since records began in 1836, with 19 English counties recording no rainfall during the entire month.
