By Zoila Palma: A boat carrying medical supplies, food and solar panels arrived in Havana today as part of an international aid effort responding to Cuba’s worsening energy crisis.
The vessel, the Maguro shrimp fishing boat, reached the island three days later than expected after encountering strong winds, currents and technical issues during its journey from Mexico, CBS reports.
The arrival forms part of the “Our America Convoy,” an air and sea mission delivering approximately 50 tonnes of aid to Cuba.
Initial shipments had already arrived by plane from Europe, Latin America and the United States, with two additional vessels expected shortly after the Maguro’s docking.
As the boat entered Havana Bay, activists on board displayed signs reading “Let Cuba live,” while supporters gathered onshore chanted against the ongoing US blockade.
The vessel was symbolically renamed “Granma 2.0,” referencing the historic yacht used by Fidel Castro’s forces during the Cuban Revolution.
The aid seeks to provide direct relief to Cuban citizens amid what they describe as a de facto US oil blockade introduced in January under U.S. President Donald Trump.
