International News: AI reshaping college choices as more students pursue high-Exposure Degrees

By Zoila Palma:  A new Lumina Foundation-Gallup poll has found that Artificial Intelligence is increasingly influencing the academic choices of university students, with 42 percent of bachelor’s degree students saying they have reconsidered their field of study because of AI.

Another 16 percent reported they had already changed their degree path due to concerns or opportunities linked to the rapidly evolving technology.

Despite fears that AI could replace jobs in some industries, the report found that students are continuing to pursue degrees tied to occupations with high AI exposure. Enrollment in the most AI-exposed degree programs has risen by 8 percent since 2017, driven largely by growth in fields such as engineering, even as computer science enrollment has declined. Researchers noted that students may see AI-related careers as offering stronger future job prospects and higher salaries.

The study also found that graduates from highly AI-exposed fields are still finding employment within their professions.

Data from the American Community Survey showed that most computer science graduates continue to work in computer and mathematics occupations, with little change in career patterns between the pre-pandemic years and 2023–2024. Researchers said this suggests that AI has not yet forced large numbers of graduates to leave their chosen industries.

Researchers said several factors may explain why students are not avoiding AI-exposed degrees.

They noted that the long-term impact of AI on employment remains uncertain, while universities may also be adapting course content to emphasize skills that complement AI technology.
