By Zoila Palma: Today, the heads of major artificial intelligence companies urged the United Nations to establish stronger safeguards for the rapidly advancing technology, warning that poorly managed AI could pose serious risks to humanity.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told the UN Security Council that AI could become “a risk to humanity as a whole” if it is not properly managed.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also warned that humanity could potentially lose control over the future as AI systems become increasingly powerful. Both executives called for governments to establish safeguards and controls to prevent AI technology from becoming too powerful to regulate.
The UN Security Council meeting brought together technology leaders and world officials to discuss whether the growing capabilities and widespread use of AI should be subject to international controls.
Discussions also focused on who should oversee AI systems, how global safeguards could be implemented and how to prevent AI power from becoming concentrated in a single company or country.
The meeting came a day after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned about the dangers of “killer robots.”
Experts and European leaders have similarly raised concerns about autonomous weapons and the possibility that increasingly advanced AI could be used in life-and-death decisions, adding urgency to international discussions over AI governance.
