By Zoila Palma: Ten years after ABC7 Chicago employee Anne Swaney was killed while on vacation in Belize, her murder remains unsolved.
Thursday marked a decade since Swaney, a 39-year-old executive producer of digital operations at ABC7, was found dead during a visit to a horse ranch she had previously traveled to.
Swaney’s body was discovered in the Mopan River near an eco-resort popular with American and Canadian horse enthusiasts.
An autopsy determined she was strangled, and her personal belongings were found on a yoga deck beside the river.
The Belize Police Department led the investigation, with assistance from FBI agents based in Miami, but no arrests were ever made.
The FBI has since said there are no new developments, and a $20,000 reward once offered in the case has expired.
Private investigator Steven Kirby said investigations involving foreign jurisdictions can face major obstacles over time, noting that witnesses move away, memories fade and potential leads disappear as cases grow cold.
Despite early international attention, the case has remained unresolved for a decade.
Swaney’s legacy, however, continues through Lockport’s Legacy Ranch, a therapeutic riding facility founded by her best friend, Sandi Moleski.
