International News: 9 dead, 50 missing and dozens more trapped in tunnels following Major earthquake in Taiwan

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, Taiwan was struck by a major 7.2 magnitude Earthquake that killed 9 people.

According to Reuters, the tremor was the biggest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years.

More than 900 people were injured and 50 more are reported missing.

Search and rescue teams continue to search for dozens of people trapped inside highway tunnels.

The quake hit at a depth of 15.5 km (9.6 miles), just as people were headed for work and school, setting off a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines that was later lifted.

Fire authorities said they had already evacuated some 70 people trapped in tunnels near Hualien city, including two Germans.

Leaders from around the world including Belize’s Prime Minister have extended sympathies to the people and Government of Taiwan.

Thousands have taken to social media to share prayers for the people of Taiwan.
