By Zoila Palma: At least 7 people, including 3 minors, were killed when a small jet crashed during an attempted emergency landing in central Mexico, USA Today reports.
The Cessna Citation 650 went down on Monday, December 15, in the municipality of San Mateo Atenco, shortly before reaching Toluca International Airport, about 60 miles southwest of Mexico City, according to Mexico’s Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.
Federal officials said the aircraft had departed from Acapulco on Mexico’s Pacific coast and was carrying eight passengers, a pilot, and a co-pilot when it crashed around 12:30 p.m. local time.
San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz told local media that emergency responders received a call reporting the crash at approximately 12:35 p.m.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and authorities initially said it was unclear whether there were any survivors.
Images from the scene showed heavy smoke as emergency crews battled a fire after the jet struck an industrial warehouse in the Santa María Totoltepec area near Toluca.
Reports indicate the aircraft attempted to make an emergency landing on a nearby soccer field before crashing into the warehouse and bursting into flames.
