By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Five people were killed in Huitzilac, a town in Mexico’s Morelos state, on Monday evening, marking the latest in a wave of violence linked to competing criminal groups, APreports.
The victims were reportedly involved in campaigns for local leadership positions ahead of an election in March, focusing on managing community resources like the surrounding forest.
The attack occurred on the same street where eight people were killed in a similar incident eight months ago.
Residents, including farmer José Romero, say the town’s security fluctuates based on the presence of National Guard forces.
Morelos is a hotspot for criminal groups, with illegal logging and territory disputes driving much of the violence.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration has ramped up efforts to combat these groups, but violence continues to surge, including a recent incident in Tabasco where body parts were discovered along a highway.
