By Aaron Humes: A 16-year-old student from St. Augustine’s College in the Bahamas, Madeline Thompson, lost her life during an international robotics competition in Panama. The incident occurred on the final day of the FIRST Global Challenge 2025, which took place from October 29 to November 1. Belize was represented by Belize High School.
Thompson was reportedly found early Saturday morning near a public pool on the 12th floor of the hotel where she had been staying with two classmates. Initial reports indicate she may have fallen from the 27th floor, although the specifics of the incident remain under investigation, per Eyewitness News Bahamas. Investigators in Panama have not confirmed whether foul play was involved.
The Trinidad Express reports via the Caribbean Media Corporation that St. Augustine’s College has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Thompson, emphasizing the profound impact her death has had on the school community. The statement released by the school highlighted their commitment to supporting Thompson’s family, friends, and classmates during this difficult time. The delegation at the competition included faculty members, a parent, and the school principal, all of whom are also grieving the loss.
Monsignor Alfred Culmer of St. Joseph’s Parish, where Thompson was an active member, shared that he prayed with her mother following the heartbreaking news. The parish described Thompson as a “cherished member” who had a kind heart and a commitment to serving her community, specifically noting her dedication to the St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen.
As the investigation continues, the Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they are working closely with Panamanian officials to address the situation and support the Thompson family.
