By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: As of January 10, 2025, at least six wildfires are still raging across Los Angeles County, resulting in 11 confirmed deaths. Authorities warn the full toll won’t be clear until it’s safe to enter affected neighborhoods, CNN reports.
Over 100,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, with tens of thousands more on alert.
Governor Newsom has called for an independent investigation into water pressure issues with hydrants during the fires.
Meanwhile, more than 10,000 properties have been destroyed, and entire neighborhoods flattened.
Firefighters have made progress, with the Hurst Fire 70% contained and the Kenneth Fire 50% contained. The coastal Palisades Fire is 8% contained, and the Eaton Fire in Altadena is expected to see significant containment soon.
Fire activity shifted east on Friday, with crews now focused on the Mandeville Canyon area, near the 405 Freeway.
Though Red Flag conditions expired, the fire is still spreading rapidly, driven by topography rather than extreme winds.
The FBI has moved its emergency operations center from Westwood to Orange County due to heavy smoke, ensuring continued operations amidst the disaster.
Additionally, Los Angeles has opened two new evacuation shelters, and over a dozen animal shelters are accepting pets.
