By Zoila Palma: More than 1.6 million travelers are expected to flock to Mexico this weekend as the nation celebrates its iconic Day of the Dead, a vibrant tradition that honors ancestors with color, music, and devotion.
From October 31 to November 2, streets across Mexico will glow with marigolds, candles, and intricate altars as families prepare to welcome the spirits of departed loved ones back home.
The centuries-old celebration, which blends pre-Hispanic beliefs with Catholic customs, remains one of Mexico’s most meaningful and visually striking cultural expressions.
In homes and public plazas, families are constructing ofrendas — altars adorned with photographs, candles, sugar skulls, and the bright orange cempasúchil flower, said to guide souls back to the living world. “This is a unique celebration, full of color and joy, where we honor life through our traditions,” said Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Mexico’s Minister of Tourism.
Major cities and small towns alike will be transformed into landscapes of orange and gold, as the nation embraces a time of remembrance and renewal.
Across the country, parades and processions will fill streets with skeletal figures, dancers, and music.
Mexico City’s grand parade along Paseo de la Reforma, Oaxaca’s artistic sand tapestries, and Pátzcuaro’s candlelit vigils by the lake all highlight the diversity of the celebration.
Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Day of the Dead continues to unite families and fascinate visitors from around the world — a reminder that in Mexico, love and memory never truly fade.
