By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that U.S. airlines are banned from operating in Haiti for 30 days following a series of gunfire incidents involving commercial planes, Reuters report.
Three U.S. flights were struck by bullets on Monday, raising serious safety concerns.
American Airlines confirmed its flight 819, arriving in Miami from Port-au-Prince, was hit by gunfire, with a bullet impacting the aircraft’s exterior.
The airline is working with authorities to investigate the incident.
Spirit Airlines also reported its flight was damaged by gunfire, leading to a diversion to the Dominican Republic. A flight attendant was injured, but no passengers were harmed.
JetBlue Airways reported similar bullet damage to a plane returning from Haiti, which landed safely in New York.
The FAA issued a Notice to Air Mission, restricting U.S. flights from operating below 10,000 feet in Haitian airspace due to “safety-of-flight risks.”
The agency cited ongoing security instability in Haiti, where armed gangs have increasingly targeted aircraft.
Haitian authorities are investigating the incidents, with the FBI involved.
This comes as Haiti’s security situation continues to deteriorate, with gangs frequently targeting both civilian and military aircraft.
