Despite decades of progress, an estimated 739 million adults and youth worldwide still lack basic literacy skills, while millions of children remain out of school or struggle to reach minimum reading proficiency.
This year’s celebration carries the theme “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” reflecting the profound impact of digitalisation on education, work, and daily life. While digital tools can expand learning opportunities for marginalized groups, experts warn they also risk widening inequality by leaving behind those without access to both traditional literacy and digital skills.
Concerns about digital surveillance, online bias, and environmental costs add further urgency to the conversation.
Literacy in today’s world extends beyond reading and writing—it now includes the ability to access, evaluate, and engage with digital content responsibly.
ILD 2025 will be marked by events and reflections at global, regional, and national levels, showcasing policies and initiatives that promote literacy as a human right and a public good.
